7-16 February 2025 Tour Report

Introduction:
Birdwatching in The Gambia offer one of the most rewarding experiences in West Africa. Despite its small size, 11,300 km², The Gambia boasts over 580 recorded bird species, according to African Bird Club. Its varied habitats—mangroves, riverine forests, wetlands, savannas, and coastal beaches—support both resident and migratory birds.
Birding here is easy and accessible. The River Gambia cuts across the country, offering fantastic sightings right from boat cruises. From kingfishers to bee-eaters and fish eagles, the riverbanks are alive with color and sound. Wetlands attract waders and herons, while forests shelter hornbills, turacos, and woodpeckers.
Famous birding sites include Abuko Nature Reserve, Tanji Bird Reserve, Kotu Creek, and the Kiang West National Park. Even hotel gardens and roadside trees can reveal surprises like sunbirds or the striking Violet Turaco.
European birders often flock here in winter, as The Gambia lies along the East Atlantic Flyway. Migrants like ospreys, warblers, and wheatears join the local species, making the bird diversity remarkable.
The people of The Gambia are warm and bird-friendly. Local bird guides are knowledgeable and skilled, helping visitors spot elusive species. Birding tourism supports livelihoods and promotes conservation awareness.
From the smallest crombecs to mighty African fish eagles, birdwatching in The Gambia is a delight. Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned birder, it’s a top destination worth visiting.
My guide was Insumana Drammeh; is nice man known as the “best boy”. He is kind, helpful and knowledgeable professional bird guide. He is also conversant with the Gambia Wildlife. I highly recommend him as a bird tour guide. His WhatsApp number (+220 680 9110).

Day 1: 07/02/2025
This was my first visit to a West African country, and almost 40% of the birds I saw were new to me—a truly thrilling experience for any birder. After breakfast at the hotel, I took a short stroll around the grounds. There were a couple of Speckled Pigeons perched on a nearby building, along with Laughing Doves, Pied Crows, and a number of Beautiful Sunbirds. I also spotted a couple of Senegal Parrots—a real treat to kick off the day.
I met my guide, Ansumana. and driver Cham, and we quickly set off along the Senegambia Highway. While driving, I had my first encounter with Hooded Vultures soaring over the buildings and roads—these impressive scavengers seemed to be quite common in the area, giving me a first taste of The Gambia’s unique birding landscape.
We reached Abuko Nature Reserve at 8:35 AM, parked the car, and spent the next four hours birding. The highlights were numerous and memorable: Black-billed and Blue-spotted Wood-Doves, Red-eyed and Mourning Collared Doves, Speckled Pigeon, Violet Turaco, Black Crake, African Darter, African Jacana, Palm-nut Vulture, Woodland Kingfisher, Broad-billed Roller, Grey Kestrel, Fanti Sawwing, Snowy-crowned Robin-Chat, Olive-naped Weaver, Red-billed Firefinch, and more Beautiful Sunbirds—an incredible haul for just one morning!
After our time at Abuko, we headed to Lamin Lodge and Restaurant for lunch at 3:00 PM. This rustic riverside spot offered a wonderful break with its wooden structure nestled among the mangroves—a perfect place to refuel and soak in the surroundings.
Post-lunch, we continued birding along the banks of the river and in the surrounding bushes. The highlights here included Grey-hooded Gull, Western Red-billed Hornbill, Abyssinian and Broad-billed Rollers, Northern Puffback, Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird, Fork-tailed Drongo, Northern Crombec, Senegal Eremomela, Pygmy Sunbird, Splendid Sunbird, Little Weaver, Village Weaver, Red-billed Quelea, Red-cheeked Cordon-bleu, Red-billed Firefinch, and Northern Grey-headed Sparrow.
